The Client

Founded in 2000 by Michael J. Fox, the foundation is committed to accelerating the search for a cure for Parkinson’s disease while advancing research and improving therapies for those living with the condition.

The Goal: The Bookmark Project aimed to enhance The Michael J. Fox Foundation’s website by enabling users to create personalized libraries of bookmarked pages and articles, organized into custom folders for easy access. This feature not only improved user experience but also provided the Michael J. Fox Foundation with valuable insights into user behavior, helping the foundation prioritize content updates, identify gaps, and deliver more relevant, engaging resources to its community.

The Challenge: Implementing a Unified Single Sign-On Authentication System

  • MJFF utilized three different authentication methods across its digital platforms.
  • The organization needed a unified approach to leverage a single authentication source across domains.
  • Multiple stakeholders were involved, making alignment on a single SSO solution complex.
  • Integration with Salesforce was required for efficient data sharing and user behavior tracking.

Approach: Strategic Process and Technological Implementation

Strategic Approach

  • Conducted multiple discussions with Michael J. Fox Foundation stakeholders to align on requirements across platforms.
  • Identified the need for a future-proof SSO strategy that could extend beyond the parent site.
  • Proposed three potential approaches for SSO integration.
  • Finalized Auth0 as the single authentication source for user registrations and login.

Design Approach

  • Step-by-step analysis of the user journey through account creation, bookmarking capabilities, and the dashboard.
  • Style tiles for alignment on design direction
  • Fully interactive designs built in Figma for testing usability and accessibility.

Technology Implementation

  • Auth0 SSO Integration: Enabled seamless authentication across MJFF’s platforms.
  • Salesforce Integration: Ensured user data and bookmarking interactions were efficiently shared and analyzed.
  • Scalability Focus: Designed the solution to be adaptable for future MJFF domains.

Accessibility Requirements

  • WCAG 2.1 Level AA: Michael J. Fox Foundation platforms have expanded requirements that Specbee assisted on during the design and implementation phase.

Results Achieved

  • The Bookmarking Feature was successfully integrated into the MJFF website.
  • The SSO solution using Auth0 was confirmed and implemented.
  • MichaelJFox.org significantly increased highly interactive users beyond expectations.
